The Body Relaxation

Make sure you are sitting comfortably with your feet flat on the floor and your arms by your side.  Close your eyes and take a big breath in through your nose, filling your lungs.  Slowly breathe out of your mouth. Breathe in … and out.  As you breathe in, know that your are breathing all the goodness from around you and as you breathe out, breathe out any worries or troubles.  Feel yourself becoming calm and relaxed as you breathe in and out.  Let any thoughts float away, they are not important right now. Just keep breathing in and out, calm and relaxed.

Starting at your feet, put all your attention on your feet.  How do they feel?  Are they hot, warm cold? Curl your toes tight then release.  Let all the tightness go, let go and relax.

Notice your legs, think of all your muscles in your legs and tighten them. Hold.  Then relax, let them hang loose and relax. Feel how heavy they are, sinking into the ground.

Think about your tummy, notice how soft it is.  Push it out as far as you can.  Then relax, let it sink back to its normal place.

Focus on your hands.  Squeeze them together as tight as you can.  Hold then shut. Now open your hands and let the feeling go.  Relax your hands.

Take your attention to your shoulders. Raise them up towards your ears and let them flop.  Raise them up again, and release.  Do this one more time.

Focus on your jaw, clench your jaw tight. Hold. Let it go. Relax and let it go. Wiggle your nose up and down and flare your nostrils. Scrunch your eyes tight and relax.

Feel all the tension in your body melting away.  Floating away.  Your body feels heavy as it lies on the floor.

Take a deep breath in through your nose …. and slowly breath out through your mouth.

Wiggle your fingers and toes and when you are ready, open your eyes.

The Raindrop Relaxation Meditation

Make sure you are sitting comfortably with your feet flat on the floor and your arms by your side.  Close your eyes and take a big breath in through your nose, filling your lungs.  Slowly breathe out of your mouth. Breathe in … and out.  As you breathe in, know that your are breathing all the goodness from around you and as you breathe out, breathe out any worries or troubles.  Feel yourself becoming calm and relaxed as you breathe in and out.  Let any thoughts float away, they are not important right now. Just keep breathing in and out, calm and relaxed.

Visualise yourself standing in your garden. Look at all the flowers, plant pots and bushes that are there. Maybe there is a tree? You are standing on the velvety, green grass and as you breathe in and out, you realise that the only noise you can hear is your own heartbeat.  Listen to your heartbeat…  Beating slowly and deeply, your chest going out and in.

It begins to rain. Tiny, little raindrop start to fall down from the sky.  It is magical.  Feel the soft, gentle raindrops as they kiss your face.  Close your eyes and look up, feel the raindrops, one by one gently land on your face. Cleaning your energy, making you feel brighter. The raindrops splat on the tip of your nose and instantly drop downwards.  You can feel the warm raindrops as they plop on your warm skin. It tickles and you smile to yourself.  As more and more delicate raindrops begin to fall, your worries or problems you are feeling begin to disappear – like magic.  One by one all your troubles and worries disappear!

Notice how light you feel, free of your worries and troubles.  It is good to feel this way and you smile as you notice how light you are and how happy you feel. The wonderful, warm raindrops makes you feel calm and relaxed, Calm and happy.

You open your eyes and spy a rainbow, a huge, bright rainbow with all the colours sparkling bright. You know now that you feel happy and calm, you are relaxed and safe. It is good to be you and you smile even bigger than before.

Take a big breath in, filling your lungs, then breathe out slowly.  Notice how different you feel, how happy and calm you are now.  All your troubles have been taken away. You feel lighter and happy.  Breathe in and out.  Wiggle your fingers and toes and slowly open your eyes.

Candle Meditation

Close your eyes and take a big deep breath in and out.  In and out. You feel relaxed and calm and any worries float away, they are not important now.  You are calm and relaxed and your body begins to sink into the ground, it feels heavy, you feel relaxed.  You are happy and safe. Breathing in and out.

As you look at a candle flame, let your eyes slowly become unfocused.  Watch how the flame flickers and grows taller and taller, or smaller and smaller.  Look at the shapes it makes as it dances and shifts.  Notice the different colours, what colours can you see?

Try to keep your mind still and empty, concentrate o
n the flame.

(Start with 3 minutes and get longer as their concentration increases.)

Take a long breath in through your nose, slowly exhale. When you are ready, open your eyes.

Calmer kids is primarily focused on children, however many of the parents I work with join in my 1:1 sessions, either to experience the relaxation techniques and meditations or to understand how I work so that they can continue to help their child at home.  This is great because ultimately once I have finished working with a family, my hope is that they can continue and see the benefits deepen. I always say to my families that Calmer Kids isn’t a ‘Magic Wand’ and that the techniques I introduce take time before they become natural, however it should be considered as a way of life and introducing the whole family would be wonderful.

With this in mind, I have decided to share some of my relaxation exercises, meditations, tips and resources on this page so that you can try them at home with your child/children or enjoy them yourself.
